I have just opened my ring box to check my rings prior to our wedding. It looks like the metal is rusting. Can this be repaired?Updated 2 months ago
This is a common occurrence for rings that have been packaged up and left unworn for a number of months.
This is a simple case of oxidation. This is where the gold metal reacts to exposure to oxygen, chemicals or other substances, which results in some colour change to spots of the band. For example, this is what causes gold to appear darker, or silver to turn black.
Daily wear helps to keep the oxidation away as the ring constantly rubs against other surfaces. That being said, acid from your skin or other cleaning agents can dull or discolour your ring in places over time.
This is quite normal, and may be more likely if your ring has been stored in a box for a while, or when it is exposed to certain lotions, as an example.
While these stains can be stubborn, they are very fixable! You may find that your polishing cloth (the white LOUISE JEAN cloth included in your ring box) is not sufficient, as this is simply a cleaning/buffing cloth.
The best fix for this is generally a dedicated gold polishing cloth, which contains a very light compound that is very effective at cleaning the gold of your ring!
We use the Town Talk Gold Polish Cloth, which you can view and purchase from our website, at the following link: https://louisejean.com/products/gold-polishing-cloth
Alternatively, if we find this still does not work, you may like to schedule your ring in for a full service and clean.
